No More Excuses
One of the most common comments I get when I tell people where I am traveling next is that they wish they could travel so much. So, here's the tea. You can. We make a lot of excuses about why we can’t travel, but the truth is they're all excuses. Every excuse you have has a solution or viable alternative. Let's unpack that a bit by going over a few examples.
Example 1 - I can't afford to travel - When I hear this statement, I think it all boils down to a person's personal priorities and the degree to which their desire to travel is compared to other things they want to do. For example, you may value being able to purchase a pair of designer jeans or shoes over a flight to Paris. So, it's not that you can't afford to go to Paris, you just rather spend money on other desires/priorities.
Example 2 - I don’t have anyone to go with. Here’s the thing, the majority of us come into this world alone. While it’s really awesome to be able to travel with friends, the reality is that it’s really hard to do. As we become adults, our lives take on so many other responsibilities. Those four besties that hung out with you every day in high school, are now possibly married with kids, building a highly successful career with lots of demands on her time or have aging parents to care for. Thus, to get schedules coordinated for everyone to go away for a weekend is damn near impossible. This is when you have to build up the confidence to go alone. You can start small by doing a few local weekend trips and then once you have the confidence, stretch out to other domestic and international trips. Don’t let the fact that you don’t have someone to go with you stop you from visiting a destination that’s on your bucket list.
Travel can be therapeutic, even more so if done solo. So, if you’re feeling stuck and uninspired, take a trip. Don’t overthink it, just do it. Even if this means driving just a few towns over and checking yourself into a hotel for the weekend. Don’t allow your mindset to deter you from following your dreams. I promise you, after you take the first step, the full staircase will appear.
